Nottingham Forest receive UEFA news as three new rules could impact Nuno Espirito Santo’s side

Nottingham Forest are eyeing up a tilt at the Champions League next season and the two-time winners are firmly in the hunt for a place at next season’s top table when it comes to European football.

Forest reaching the Champions League would be romantic in the eyes of some football supporters, although it might rustle some feathers among the powers that be who seem hellbent on making these tournaments a closed shop.

The Reds – along with the likes of Newcastle and Aston Villa – are trying to upset the applecart to a certain degree and considering Forest almost went down last season, it would be a remarkable transformation to see the Reds get into the Champions League just 12 months later.

If Forest do qualify, there could be some changes that impact the Reds. UEFA are now finalising some of those rearrangements and it offers something for the club to think about if qualification is secured.

Three new Champions League rules that might impact Nottingham Forest

Forest haven’t been contesting for glory in the Champions League since it was called the European Cup and it’s fair to say that a lot has changed in the years since those glory days.

Teams are now split into one big group, with each team playing four matches and home and four matches away before the knockout stages get underway.

The top eight teams go straight through to the last 16, with the teams ninth to 24th facing off in the first knockout round to make up the round of 16.

It’s basically caused quite a stir with the new format, with some football fans believing that the new method hasn’t had the desired impact on the entertainment value of the tournament.
