CONFIRMED;Rangers player has declared his career is over due to
Every Rangers fan knows exactly what James Tavernier’s biggest strength is, an uncanny knack of being able to find the back of the net when it matters most.
Few would have thought when Mark Warburton signed the young right-back from Wigan in 2015 that, one day, he would lead us out in a European final and finish as the tournament’s top goalscorer.
With every passing week, the numbers get more and more incredible with the Rangers skipper’s latest double taking James Tavernier into the company of some of world football’s greats, according to The Sportsman.
Rangers have goal scoring legend in James Tavernier
Rangers News has already covered how Tavernier’s numbers stack up against one of the SPFL’s most consistent and decorated players of all time, James Forrest.
The Gers number two outperforms his Celtic rival in both goals and assists in 50 appearances less.
But how does Rangers captain James Tavernier rank compared to other goalscoring defenders?
The list, compiled by The Sportsman shows Tavernier sitting in seventh place after his weekend exploits.
Players like Sergio Ramos, Roberto Carlos, Laurent Blanc, Ronald Koeman and Fernando Hierro are the football heavyweights that make up the numbers with some incredible statistics.
Obviously, most of the players were regular penalty and set-piece takers and, having just turned 32-years old, Tavernier will be hoping to climb a few more places before he is finished.
Blanc, in fourth place, is some 40 goals away, which might be out of reach but a place in the top five awaits if he can score another 20.
As Alan Hutton said at the weekend covering the Hearts semi-final, he still has 54 goals to add to his 120 assists if he doesn’t take penalties, which works out at six a season from defence.
