Leicester eyeing record-breaking manager likened to Enzo Maresca to replace Ruud van Nistelrooy
Leicester City are staring at a return to the Championship, and with it, a potential change in manager once again.
Ruud van Nistelrooy’s tenure with the Foxes has been nothing short of disastrous, with Leicester winning just once in 2025 as relegation looks all-but guaranteed with the King Power Stadium side sat 19th in the Premier League standings.
Team | MP | W | D | L | GD | Pts | |
17 | 31 | 9 | 5 | 17 | -16 | 32 | |
18 | 31 | 4 | 8 | 19 | -34 | 20 | |
19 | 30 | 4 | 5 | 21 | -42 | 17 | |
20 | 30 | 2 | 4 | 24 | -49 | 10 |
With Leicester facing high-flying Newcastle United on Monday, another loss will be the final nail in the coffin for Van Nistelrooy’s hopes of keeping the East Midlands side up, with this season going as badly as one could imagine.
And heading into another season in the Championship, Leicester are now considering a move for a manager who could fit the bill in what the board and fans are looking for.
Russell Martin being considered as Leicester’s next manager
According to the Sun, Russell Martin is being eyed as a potential replacement for Van Nistelrooy, with the former Southampton manager noted for his passing game that is similar to what Enzo Maresca used at Leicester to help win promotion from the Championship.
Although Martin played a role in Southampton’s dismal Premier League campaign this season with the Saints one place below Leicester in the standings, the 39-year-old coach is still a manager with quite a good reputation.
Martin led Southampton to a record-breaking run of form last season in the Championship as per the Guardian as the south coast side sealed promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs after a dramatic win against Leeds United at Wembley Stadium.
And if Leicester are looking to wipe the slate clean for next season, an innovative manager who knows the Championship well in Martin could be a wise step in the right direction, with the former Southampton man ready for a new job.
