Former Leicester City star makes surprise retirement U-turn one month after calling time on career

A former Leicester City star has made a sensational U-turn on his decision to retire from football, only a month after calling time on his career.

Just days after Joe Dodoo returned to football for the first time in two years, it now appears that another former Fox has grown cold feet at the thought of being without a club or being retired full stop.

But, following an approach from a Championship club he’s made the decision to return and help in their quest for survival.

Martyn Waghorn comes out of retirement to re-join Derby County

Martyn Waghorn announced his retirement from football in February but has quickly changed his mind after being convinced to sign for Derby County.

It seems that Waghorn is unlikely to play for the East Midlands though, with a report suggesting he won’t be registered by John Eustace.

A post from Sky Sports reporter: “Martyn Waghorn has come out of retirement to try to help #dcfc avoid relegation. 35-yr-old retired in Feb but is training with Derby again. Eustace thinks his experience could help galvanise his squad. No plans currently to register Waghorn as a player for final 8 games.”

Waghorn credits Leicester loan for making him a better player

Waghorn enjoyed a productive few years in the East Midlands, scoring 12 goals in a loan spell in the 09/10 season before making the move permanent.

He spent another three-and-a-half years at the King Power Stadium before joining Wigan Athletic in 2014 but without his time at the Foxes, he wouldn’t have become the player he went on to become.

Speaking to the Roker Report, he said: “I could have stayed at Sunderland and got fifteen minutes here and there, maybe got a chance if someone got injured but I agreed with Steve Bruce..
