Leeds United announces intent for major stadium expansion and relocation

Leeds United Football Club has unveiled ambitious plans to enhance and expand its historic Elland Road Stadium, aiming to increase the capacity from 37,645 to approximately 53,000 seats.

The club promises the project will bring modernisation to the stadium, which has been Leeds United’s home since its establishment in 1919, while preserving the unique atmosphere that fans cherish.

The transformation project is set to be executed in phases to ensure minimal disruption to seating availability, according to Leeds United. The boost in general admission seating will position Elland Road as the seventh largest club stadium in the country. The aspiration is to obtain UEFA Category 4 status, aligning Elland Road with Europe’s elite stadia.

Central to the project’s success is a team of specialists combining global stadium experience with local expertise. The ownership group, 49ers Enterprises, which has previously overseen the construction of American Football team San Francisco 49ers’ Levi’s Stadium, is leveraging its extensive background in sports venue development. Leeds United’s board members also bring substantial experience managing large-scale real estate projects worldwide.

Architectural firm KSS, known for its stadium-specific designs, will lead the creative vision. Structural engineers Buro Happold and Leeds-based management team Rise, both with experience in overseeing successful mixed-use developments in the UK, will support the complex logistics. Specialist acoustic consultants have also been engaged to ensure that Elland Road’s renowned atmosphere is retained throughout the renovation process.

Additionally, a local transport consultant has been appointed to address access routes and traffic management during construction and on matchdays. This ensures an enhanced experience for both residents and fans.

Leeds United chairman and 49ers Enterprises president Paraag Marathe expressed enthusiasm for the project: “Elland Road is more than a stadium; it is a symbol of community and pride.

Our plans illuminate our dedication to the club’s long-term success, and I am thrilled to welcome thousands more supporters while preserving the unique atmosphere.”
