CONFIRMED DEPARTURE;Celtic’s goalkeeper Schmeichel has announced his resignation due to. what happened earlier
Celtic face a nervous wait to discover the extent of Kasper Schmeichel’s injury.
The Danish goalkeeper appeared to injure his shoulder area after an awkward landing in his country’s Nations League defeat to Portugal on Sunday night.
The incident occurred in the first half of extra-time, but Denmark boss Brian Riemer had already made all six substitutions.
Schmeichel opted to stay on the pitch although he remained in clear discomfort for the remainder of the game.
Danish outlet Bold reports that he was quickly taken to hospital after the final whistle along with national team doctor Morten Boesen to undergo further examination.
Riemer explained: “If it had been possible, I would have replaced Kasper Schmeichel because he was injured, but we had already made all our substitutions.
We talked about Kasper Schmeichel going out, but he didn’t want to go out himself. As long as he could stand in goal, it was an advantage for us to have 11 players on the field. The alternative was that we only had nine outfield players if we had to put a man off the field and on goal.”
Earlier in the game, the goalkeeper kept his side in the tie by saving a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty.
Schmeichel has been in excellent form for Celtic this season and losing him for any length of time would be a major blow to Brendan Rodgers.
Since joining the Hoops last summer, he has helped his side keep 24 clean sheets while pulling off a string of impressive saves both domestically and in the Champions League.
