The Englishman has impressed in League One, prompting calls for a permanent deal as the third-tier club eye a Championship return.

Speaking to Football League World on 22 March, Hendrie said: “They’re coming out of League One into the Championship, they’re going to need players like him, and I think that will be the key to their success.

“If they can keep a good squad of players who can adapt and play in the Championship, I think he’s definitely one that you’d think that they’d want to maybe keep on a permanent basis in the summer.

“Squad depth in the Championship is so key because of the relentless amount of games and that has been proven in League One as well for them.

“I do feel that they should keep Dowell on a permanent. There’s still more to come from him, so keeping Dowell is a must.”

Dowell’s potential permanent move from Rangers to Birmingham City this summer could be a win-win scenario, particularly benefiting Gers as his contract runs out in 2026.

The 27-year-old’s stint at Ibrox has been underwhelming and he’s perhaps not up to the standard required for Rangers’ ambitions in the Scottish Premiership and European competitions.

His limited impact suggests he’s surplus to plans, especially as the squad undergoes a rebuild to close the gap on rivals Celtic.

Dowell’s Championship experience – over 120 appearances across multiple clubs – makes him a valuable asset for Birmingham, but his lack of pace and struggles at higher levels, like his failed Derby loan, underline why he’s not cut out for Gers’ intensity.

Cashing in this summer would free up wages and squad space, enabling them to target players better suited to their tactical needs and physical demands.
