BREAKING NEWS Barry Ferguson makes relegation vow with Rangers needing to eclipse great escape
Rangers and the San Francisco 49ers have a decision to make on Barry Ferguson in the coming weeks.
The former Gers captain was re-hired by the club to take over the reins on an interim basis until the end of the season.
Ferguson stepped in to replace Philippe Clement who was eventually sacked by the Glasgow outfit.
David Templeton delivers verdict on Barry Ferguson becoming the next Rangers manager
David Templeton was asked if he views Ferguson as the next permanent manager come the end of the season given his 60 per cent win rate since taking over.
He lauded his efforts in the game against Celtic and believed he was bold enough to make the decisions that Clement would not have.
In the same situation, with Celtic equalising, he is of the opinion that Gers would not have gone on to win the Old Firm Derby.
He told PLZ Soccer on 21 March at 46:49: “I think if he is going the way he is then they’ll have to (make Ferguson the permanent manager). Since he’s come in, they’ve looked a different side.
Even that Celtic game, at two each, you’re thinking Celtic got the momentum, probably going to win. I think if it was under Clement, he probably doesn’t make the changes that Ferguson makes. He brings Igamane on.
Making big decisions like that is only going to help him and it depends on how he does in the Europa League, but I think they’ve got a tough tie this one.”
San Francisco 49ers must consider alternatives as well as Barry Ferguson
If Rangers are considering Ferguson for the permanent managerial role, they must treat him equitably, ensuring he undergoes the same rigorous interview process as all other candidates, regardless of his iconic status as a former captain.
