Inside Rangers set piece improvement as coach’s playbook revealed
Rangers triumphed 3-2 winners in the latest Old Firm encounter as Hamza Igamane netted a late winner for Barry Ferguson’s side at Celtic Park.
Nicolas Raskin got the scoring up and running within four minutes, with the goal coming from a well-executed corner routine.
And former Celtic and Hibernian midfielder Scott Allan reckons the move had all the blueprints of new Rangers coach Billy Dodds, who he worked under at Inverness CT.
This is a continuation of Rangers trying to assert themselves and how important set pieces can be in terms of getting a foothold in the game,” he said.
It’s really well worked. You see this, it’s a Billy Dodds special. I’ve worked with him and I’ve seen this many of times.
“You bring the three Rangers players out and it attracts the three Celtic players, it then isolates Maeda. So, you’ve then got the guys attacking the ball and Raskin gets across fantastically well.
“Listen, after you get that setup, the timing of the run and the delivery from Tavernier, and the finish is fantastic. But it all comes from organisation
Analysing Rangers’ overall display, Allan told BBC Sportscene: “It was a huge win obviously winning away to your biggest rivals. There was a lot made of Rangers’ previous performance at Ibrox and could they replicate that at Celtic Park.
“I think when you take into account the 120 minutes, which most of them players took part in on Thursday, it was a really impressive performance tactically – especially in the big moments for Rangers.”
Speaking at full-time, Rodgers reserved praise for two Rangers players in particular as the Celtic manager and his team are given two weeks to stew over the result.
Heading into the match, Nicolas Raskin had pipped Celtic midfielder Arne Engels to a place in the Belgium international team squad.
