I will not play again;Ianis Hagi announces his sudden exit from Rangers
Gutted Ianis Hagi was reportedly taunted by Mert Hakan Yandas after missing his Rangers penalty in the shoot-out – before the Fenerbahce man skied his own effort over the bar.
Sebastian Szymanski’s double that saw Barry Ferguson’s side lose 2-0 as their aggregate advantage was cancelled out – but they would push the visitors all the way through 120 minutes.
Jack Butland would be the hero for Rangers as Fener missed three penalties to spark wild celebrations from Ferguson and his players inside the Ibrox cauldron, while rival boss Jose Mourinho was left to bemoan refereeing decisions on the night.
In the midst of a nervy conclusion at Ibrox, Turkish TV channel TRT Spor picked up on an exchange between Hagi and Yandas.
The commentary team claim that the Fener man confronted Hagi after he missed his effort from 12 yards – with the on-air detectives stating that Yandas asked the Istanbul-born Romania playmaker: “Are you a Galatasaray fan?”
Hagi’s dad Gheorghe spent fives years at Galatasaray as a player – claiming four league titles and lifting the UEFA Cup and earning legendary status at the club. Hagi Sr would also manage the club for a year – lifting the Turkish Cup in 2005.
After his attempted wind-up, Yandas would go on to send his effort well over the crossbar in the final kick of the shoot-out – and send Fenerbahce crashing out of the competition.
Pundit Rasim Ozan unleashed on air after the full-time whistle as he singled out the antics of Yandas for criticism.
“Look at me Mert Hakan Yandas, you shot yourself in the foot today. You pulled an operation that did not help your own team.
“Now millions of fans want you gone. From now on, Fenerbahçe will not be able to hold on to you if this is what you do. You have left the club in need of stitches.
