Kevin Muscat topped the Record Sport poll and formerly announces as the new manager

Record Sport polled Rangers punters and the results are in on who they want in the Ibrox hotseat

He may be revered, but Rangers fans aren’t yet going all out for Barry Ferguson landing the manager’s job on a permanent basis.

The former Ibrox captain has been handed the reins until the end of the season, and either side of a home disaster against Motherwell, has overseen a roaring comeback against Kilmarnock and a stunning Europa League away win over Fenerbahce. How he handles the second leg will determine how long the Euro adventure lasts, with a daunting trip to Celtic Park coming up this weekend.

But regardless of how he and his team performs, the majority of fans asked would prefer the club look elsewhere for their next permanent boss. 49er Enterprises are set to assume control of the club and have already started looking, with Rafa Benitez one name under consideration. Record Sport polled Rangers fans and they aren’t being dazzled by the big names, and instead want the club to revisit another former player who was in the frame but ultimately lost out to Philippe Clement last time.

We asked more than 2000 fans and former Gers defender Kevin Muscat was the punters’ choice to take the reins with 541 votes. His success in Japan with Yokohama F Marinos is giving big Ange Postecoglou vibes, and it seems fans are keen for him to get the chance this time, providing he can be persuaded to leave Shanghai Port in China.

Close friend and former Gers teammate Craig Moore has said since that he thinks the Rangers ship has perhaps sailed as far as Muscat is concerned, although fresh faces at the helm may have changed his thinking.

A return for Steven Gerrard was the next most popular choice with 483.
