Derek Ferguson has given his verdict on Coventry boss Frank Lampard being the next permanent Rangers manager.

The Gers appointed Derek’s brother Barry Ferguson temporarily after Philippe Clement’s sacking.

Patrick Stewart took his time while making a decision on the Belgian manager but finally pulled the plug on his tenure after consistent protests from fans.

With Barry taking interim charge until the end of the season, potential new owners 49ers Enterprises will have a decision to make at Ibrox once they complete their takeover.

Lampard capable of Rangers managerial role

Lampard is capable of taking the managerial role at the Light Blues, Derek says.

The former Gers midfielder believes that the Coventry boss would “absolutely” be able to take on the role at the Glaswegian outfit.

Lampard’s record in the EFL Championship this season.

While Barry has been given the reins until next summer, Lampard has been tipped to become the permanent manager at Ibrox.

Speaking on Open Goal (6 March), Derek said: “Initially, I wasn’t even thinking Lampard. Absolutely [he would be able to take the Rangers job]. He would be able to handle that.”

Ibrox needs experienced manager after Ferguson

With Barry being accompanied by the likes of Neil McCann at Ibrox on an interim basis, it would make sense for the Light Blues to hire a more experienced head coach soon.

While the current coaching staff, which also includes Billy Dodds and Allan McGregor, steered the Glaswegian outfit to a victory against Fenerbahce in the Europa League on Thursday (6 March), there still needs to be a change in the dugout come next summer.

The Gers were poor in their first two fixtures under Barry in the Scottish Premiership, and victory in Europe doesn’t change that fact.
