Derek McInnes appointment claim made at Rangers amid ‘interesting’ development
Rangers remain on the lookout for a permanent successor to Philippe Clement, with a new claim being made regarding Derek McInnes.
McInnes has regularly been tipped with the Rangers job and has even previously rejected the chance to take charge at Ibrox.
Speaking last week, after the 53-year-old’s current club Kilmarnock lost to the Gers in the Scottish Premiership, Kris Boyd suggested McInnes is still under consideration for the Rangers job.
Derek Ferguson reacts to McInnes to Rangers speculation
McInnes has also been touted as a contender to replace Clement beyond this season by Ally McCoist.
While pundit Derek Ferguson – brother of interim Gers boss Barry Ferguson – believes McInnes is a better option than Clement, he does not reckon supporters will take to him due to his previous rejection.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, Ferguson said: “Domestically, he’d be a good appointment and would do better than the previous manager. He’s been there and done it.
“It was also interesting to see Kilmarnock add to his contract last year. My opinion was he would be a better option for Rangers than Clement, with more of a style of football, and he’d get us closer to Celtic.
“But he previously refused the job, and once you’ve done that it’s hard for supporters to get over it.
“Ally McCoist got away with it, knocking Rangers back multiple times, but he turned out to be an absolute legend. McInnes would do a better job. But do I think it’ll happen? I don’t think so.”
McInnes’ coaching career
McInnes represented Rangers in his playing days, of course, and has plenty of experience in the world of management – almost exclusively in Scottish football.
The Paisley native has spent a combined 15 years or so in charge of St Johnstone, Aberdeen and Kilmarnock, with a year-and-a-half spell at Bristol City in the middle of that.
