Rangers next manager: ‘Dream appointment’ revealed as ’49ers to swing deal’

Steven Gerrard would be the “dream appointment” for Rangers to replace Philippe Clement, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that prospective new owners 49ers Enterprises are expected to have their say when they move to appoint a new permanent boss.

Rangers are keen to take their time over a decision in case currently unavailable options emerge as contenders at the end of the season.

In the meantime, Barry Ferguson has been appointed on an interim basis to give the hierarchy time to make a more long-term decision.

Gerrard has emerged as their top target at this early stage given his strong connections with the club, as he was the last manager to lift the SPFL title at Ibrox.

This comes after former Sir Alex Ferguson number two Mick Brown told Football Insider on 24 February that Gerrard would be open to returning to Rangers.

Clement was sacked by Rangers in the wake of a 2-0 defeat to St Mirren, while they remain 13 points behind Celtic in the SPFL and are out of the Scottish Cup.

Gerrard’s previous spell at Ibrox has earned him plenty of respect among the supporters – something Clement struggled to earn during his spell.

The boss is currently out of work after leaving Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Ettifaq by mutual consent at the end of January, and would be available with no compensation fee.

However, the Gers hierarchy are keen not to rush into a decision and end up with the wrong man after concerns about the appointments of Clement and Michael Beale in the past.

Brown told Football Insider on 25 February that the 49ers will play a key role in appointing the next Rangers manager and want to have their own man in charge.
