Steven Gerrard has already hinted at his stance on returning to Rangers

Steven Gerrard has been out of work since leaving Saudi Pro League team Al-Nassr earlier this year and is currently the favorite to return to Rangers for a second spell

Steven Gerrard seems to harbor ambivalent sentiments about a potential comeback to Rangers.

Liverpool legend Gerrard has rapidly become the favorite to step in for Philippe Clement, who was shown the door on Sunday as the Scottish team trailed its rival Celtic by 13 points in the championship chase. Belgian tactician Clement had held the reins since October 2023, but a 2-0 loss at home to St Mirren on Saturday led to the termination of his tenure.

Since Gerrard’s departure from Ibrox to take over at Premier League outfit Aston Villa in November 2021, Rangers has struggled to find a fitting successor. Giovanni van Bronckhorst took the helm for a year, guiding Rangers to the Europa League final and securing the Scottish Cup, yet he was dismissed shortly thereafter.

Michael Beale, once Gerrard’s right-hand man, followed suit but was also relieved of his duties after a year. Now, with another managerial switch mid-season, is a Gerrard return on the cards? After Villa relieved him of his duties in 2022, fellow Liverpool legend and former Rangers player-manager Graeme Souness shared: “I saw Steven a couple of weeks ago in Portugal.

“He seemed in fine form and I said to him, ‘Are you wanting to go back?’ and he said give it a bit of time and I’ll go back if something comes along that is interesting to him, back into the game. I don’t see him going to Glasgow Rangers. Would the supporters be happy with him going back? I’m not sure. They think he left them at a difficult time, I’m not sure.”

However, Rangers legend Ally McCoist said earlier this month: “It wouldn’t surprise me if Steven Gerrard came back to Ibrox.
