Barry Ferguson makes James Tavernier captaincy decision in first Rangers call

Barry Ferguson has been back in Rangers colours only a matter of hours and is already making big decisions.

The new Rangers manager has looked his squad in the eye and told them what his expectations are, even if the chances of silverware returning to Ibrox this season are almost nil.

One question being asked was about the immediate future of James Tavernier as Rangers captain, who now has the unenviable record of seeing more managers than any other player in the club’s history.

As interim boss, Ferguson’s job is to steady the ship, not rock the boat.

It might make fans feel better, however, the captaincy is for whoever comes in on a permanent basis to decide.

Speaking as part of the press conference for Wednesday’s trip to Rugby Park to face Kilmarnock, Ferguson said when asked about Tavernier’s role:

“I don’t feel the need to change that. He came in last night and we had a really good chat. I’ve looked him in the eyes, he’s ready to give 100%.”

Tavernier will be 34 later this year, however, Richard Gough, David Weir or Steven Davis he isn’t despite his Hall of Fame status.

Their individual performances may have declined with age, but they were far too important because of the other qualities that they brought to the team.

Should Tavernier have the captaincy taken off him?

Philippe Clement tried to replace him this season only for injury to rule out Neraysho Kasanwirjo for the season and a troublesome nerve complaint to sideline Dujon Sterling too.

Jack Butland had taken the armband, but was then followed by Nicolas Raskin who won Rangers first Old Firm game for two seasons as captain.

The diminutive Belgian is a popular figure amongst the Light Blues support, he is also a constant presence around referees when they are making decisions.
