Huge cost of sacking Philippe Clement ‘higher’ than initially thought

Philippe Clement is entitled to receive a significantly higher pay-off from Rangers than previously thought, it has been reported.

The decision to remove the Belgian as head coach was confirmed by the Ibrox club on Sunday night, with former captain Barry Ferguson set to take over on an interim basis until the end of the season.

Reports last week suggested Clement’s settlement figure stood at £1.2 million, however the fee is now believed to be much higher, according to The Daily Record.

After signing a contract extension in the summer which would have kept him at the club until 2028, Clement’s severance terms rose substantially.

A final figure is still being agreed between the Ibrox hierarchy and the outgoing manager.

There have also been reports claiming that Clement had agreed to forgo half his pay-off.

It remains to be seen whether Clement will receive a lump sum or will be left on gardening leave.

Along with Wagner, Derek McInnes is the other manager to be considered by the club in the summer with the takeover expected to be completed by then, per Ben Jacobs.

The former Premier League manager will arrive highly recommended and has also been lauded by Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.

Wagner’s experience in the English Championship and Premier League, as well as his stint at Norwich City, equips him to handle the intense scrutiny and pressure of managing in Glasgow, where fan expectations are unrelenting.

Additionally, his time under Jurgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund suggests a modern, progressive approach to coaching, potentially appealing to Rangers’ need to evolve beyond traditional Scottish football norms.

While his recent departure from Norwich in 2024 might raise questions, it also means he’d be available and motivated to prove himself at a club of Rangers’ stature.
