BREAKING NEWS:Nuno Espirito santo has signed his resignation letter due to…
Taiwo Awoniyi remained at Nottingham Forest in January but Evangelos Marinakis looks to already be plotting his replacement for the summer.
Awoniyi will be fit for Forest’s trip to Newcastle after the striker suffered a nasty-looking facial injury in the FA Cup against Exeter City but truthfully, there’s little chance he gets near the starting XI.
It’s not all Awoniyi’s fault as it was hard to predict Chris Wood’s incredible form this season, leading to Jamie Carragher naming Wood in his best Premier League XI this season.
However, the Nigerian striker hasn’t exactly impressed when given the opportunity by Nuno Espirito Santo, with only two goals to his name in comparison to Wood’s 18.
Despite this, Espirito Santo wanted to keep Awoniyi as Wood’s deputy in January rather than requesting that Marinakis splash out on a new striker, but questions remain about whether this was a temporary fix or a true sign of trust.
Now that reports are linking Forest with a summer raid to bring Tammy Abraham back to England, the future is looking bleak for Awoniyi at the City Ground.
Taiwo Awoniyi’s stance at Nottingham Forest with Tammy Abraham linked
With TBR Football reporting that Forest are one of a host of clubs linked with a move for Abraham, questions surrounding the future of Awoniyi are natural follow-ups.
With this in mind, Nottingham Forest News spoke to TBR’s Graeme Bailey to get the lowdown on where interest in Abraham would leave Awoniyi at Forest.
Bailey said: “Forest could look to upgrade and change up their striker ranks with Taiwo Awoniyi clearly not happy with his game time, but Forest’s plans will be dictated by their finishing position.”
Expectedly, Forest won’t make a decision on incoming signings until their Champions League fate is either confirmed or heartbreakingly denied, but the knowledge of Awoniyi’s dissatisfaction surrounding his minutes in the Forest squad could be acted on sooner.
