SHOCKING NEWS;Ohio state football announced a new ownership
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The SEC and the Big Ten are at the forefront of College Football Playoff expansion, and Ohio State’s athletics director supports the potential changes.
Speaking inside Ohio Stadium while many of his counterparts in the two conferences met in New Orleans on Wednesday, Ross Bjork expressed where he stands on the idea — whether it be expanding to 14 teams or 16.
I’m for expansion,” said Bjork, who joined available meetings via Zoom. “What that looks like, we’ll see.”
Control of the future of the CFP essentially sits in the hands of the Big Ten and SEC, according to a recent report from Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports.
The proposed format would guarantee four automatic bids for each of the two conferences. The ACC and Big 12 would each get two bids while one Group of Five champion would get in.
Depending on if there’s 14 or 16 teams, one or three at-large bids would get assigned.
For Bjork, supporting expansion centers heavily around creating more high-level competition.
“We’re just at a time where we have to put everything on the table to really capitalize on the moment in college athletics,” Bjork said. “If we’re sharing revenue with the athletes, which is the right thing to do, how do we produce more content?
“How do we have more high-level matchups? Clearly with viewership and the CFP, people want to watch these games.”
The proposals center around strong inclusion for the Big Ten and SEC, but Bjork believes there are other elements to consider as well.
“Clearly, the Big 10 and the SEC, we’re at the forefront,” Bjork said. “We have the biggest brands, but we also need to protect the game of college football to make sure that it’s accessible for as many people that, really, live in this world as possible.”
