Rangers news: Tom Lawrence exit twist emerges amid contract situation
David Edgar has issued his verdict on Tom Lawrence’s future away from Ibrox with his Rangers contract expiring at the end of the season.
The Wales international was handed a start by Philippe Clement on Sunday when his side travelled to Tynecastle to take on Hearts.
Gers ended up winning the game 3-1 with Lawrence playing 71 minutes before being taken off for Cyriel Dessers.
Tom Lawrence not expected to stay at Rangers beyond the summer
With the 31-year-old’s deal running out at the end of the season, Heart and Hand’s David Edgar was asked about his situation.
A suggestion was made that Clement is playing the Welshman in order to remind clubs he’s looking for a move in the summer.
However, that has been brushed away as it’s not the club’s responsibility to find another destination for a player whose contract is set to expire.
Edgar wrote on X: “Definitely not that. He’s out of contract in summer so his next move isn’t our problem.”
Tom Lawrence’s situation exposes a systemic problem with the hierarchy at Ibrox
The club have once again allowed a player to run down his contract, set to expire at the end of the season, rather than securing a transfer fee for him.
This recurring strategy of letting players leave as free agents continues to undermine the club’s financial stability and competitive edge.
Lawrence, a 31-year-old Welsh international, has been given starts under Clement, as seen in the recent 3-1 victory over Hearts, but with no extension in sight, his departure seems inevitable.
This approach highlights a deeper issue which is Gers’ failure to maximise their assets.
By not selling players like Lawrence while they still hold value, the club misses out on funds that could be reinvested into the squad.
This pattern has been a persistent problem and unless Rangers adopt a more proactive transfer strategy.
