‘Need to stay focused’ – Sunderland director makes revelation over contract talks with key duo

Sunderland are currently embroiled in the fight for promotion from the Championship. SAFC sit in 4th as it stands in close competition with Burnley, Sheffield Unitedand Leeds United for a place in the top two.

Over the past few weeks there has been a focus on strengthening the ranks in the winter transfer window, all while looking to maintain on-pitch form.

It means some important matters have been put on the backburner somewhat, perhaps most notably contract situations.

Sunderland have been looking to secure the long-term futures of team captain Dan Neil and first-choice left-back Dennis Cirkin, but no breakthrough as been made at this stage. Now, sporting director Kristjaan Speakman has issued an update on the matter.

As quoted by The Northern Echo, the SAFC director revealed that talks over Neil and Cirkin’s contracts have been shelved until the end of the season to keep the full focus on the

promotion push

. There are no doubts over the commitment of either player, but talks will be revived at a more appropriate time.

They are both big assets and players who could feasibly make a step up to a higher level in the years to come. And, the Black Cats may have to resist bids if they are unable to win promotion this season.

However, Speakman’s words indicate confidence that the two are committed to the club regardless of the promotion fight, hence the relaxed position and decision to delay further talks until the summer.

It’s the smart move from SAFC to ensure all eggs are kept in the promotion basket.

After the closure of the transfer window, all energy and power will be put into securing results and maintaining form on the pitch over the coming weeks and months.

Coming up this weekend is a home …….
