Newcastle United agree deal ‘in principle’ to sign Brazilian teenager

Newcastle United are excited about teenager Matheos Ferreira after the youngster made an impact for the Under-21s this week against Everton. They are looking to tie him up on a significant deal.

Ferreira – known as Theo – is set to sign a professional contract in August after impressing in the Under-18s and now the club’s second string. A deal in principle for the forward to sign his first big deal is in place when he reaches 17.

He made his debut in the 2-2 draw against the Toffees, entering the pitch at 2-0 down but helping claw back a point in Premier League 2 with an assist for Ellis Stanton.

Raised in Berwick, Ferreira’s father Thiago Ferreira played professional football in Spain and his mother is Camila is Brazilian, meaning he can one day represent Selecao if he given the chance. The youngster came to Newcastle’s attention after playing for Cramlington Juniors but represented Lowick and Berwick Rangers Vipers before that.

Having already represented England Under-15s, the winger is already known about in the Brazilian media. He said last year: “My mum said: ‘You want to be a footballer, you’ll have to dedicate yourself’. I was a bit scared to talk to my father, but he said yes.

“You have to be patient, because the time will come. It’s how much you want it, how much you’re willing to wait and sacrifice. The opportunity will come. You just have to keep training, wait for the right moment and seize the opportunity when it arrives.

Ferreira has been on Newcastle’s books since the age of 12 but will feature for the club’s Under-21s in the second half of the season. The winger has played 11 games for the Under-18s this season with two goals and two assists for the youth team.
