Everton make move to sign ‘top’ attacker, deal close
Everton have made an approach to sign Tidiam Gomis from SM Caen, according to Fabrizio Romano.
However, the transfer expert, reporting via his X account (Thursday, 23 January), added that the Toffees, as well as other interested parties, are set to miss out on the “top talent”.
He revealed that RB Leipzig are already closing in on a deal to sign the France Under-19s international.
David Moyes faces transfer setback at Everton
Gomis has attracted a lot of interest from clubs across Europe during the ongoing winter transfer window, with Aston Villa also linked with a move for him.
Reliable journalist Sacha Tavolieri even claimed that the Birmingham-based club are close to reaching an agreement over the 18-year-old’s transfer on 11 January.
However, it appears Leipzig have beaten the English clubs to the winger’s signature, handing a transfer setback to David Moyes.
The Bundesliga club have a reputation for signing talented players early, developing them and then selling them for a profit in the future.
While it is unclear how much Leipzig are paying Caen for Gomis now, it will not be a surprise if they pocketed a hefty profit from his sale a few years down the line.
Even if Everton managed to sign him, the teenager would have likely spent some time away on loan before being considered for first-team action.
The report also adds that other clubs such as Bayer Leverkusen, Sevilla and Juventus were also “interested” but the 27-year-old has seemingly chosen an emotional return to Glasgow.
McGrath wrote that terms are now close to being agreed on a pre-contract with the Bhoys.
Everton could have done a lot worse than Kieran Tierney
Even though Everton’s defensive line is arguably one of the strongest areas of their squad, it feels like Tierney would have been a more than valuable addition to Moyes’ ranks.
