Chris Jack: Rangers player now likely to join English club in January

Rangers midfielder Kieran Dowell is likely to seal a move south of the border and join an English club, according to Chris Jack.

The Rangers Review journalist reported on 16 January that after an unfulfilling few months at Ibrox, the 27-year-old is expected to leave in the January transfer window.

Kieran Dowell was a pointless signing for Rangers

Dowell’s move to Ibrox was initially met with some optimism when he joined on a free transfer, which somewhat cushions him from heavy criticism from the fans since no significant financial investment was lost.

However, his tenure at Ibrox has been largely disappointing, making him a seemingly pointless signing for the club.

The 27-year-old has struggled with both form and availability, which are critical factors for any player expected to contribute significantly to a competitive team.

His inability to make a lasting impact or secure a consistent role in the squad underlines the lack of success in this transfer.

It’s not surprising that Michael Beale, who was instrumental in bringing Dowell to Rangers, saw potential in him, but Beale’s own failure at the club casts a shadow over his recruitment decisions, including this one.

With Clement not seeing the Englishman in the long-term plans, his departure in the January window seems inevitable and arguably, for both parties, a relief.

The 22-year-old’s contract at Dundee runs out at the end of the season so this window, under his current deal, represents the last opportunity for the club to secure a transfer fee.

Lyall Cameron will be a solid signing for Rangers

Gers are expected to be active both in terms of incomings and outgoings in the January transfer window.

With half the month already completed, it’s a surprise that the club have not yet signed a new player in the winter.
