Rangers make approach for new midfielder, could tear up contract for free move

Rangers have enquired about the availability of CSKA Moscow midfielder Sasa Zdjelar, according to the Daily Mail.

The British tabloid reported via its website [9 January] that the Gers are showing serious interest in the Serbian international, who can may be able to leave CSKA on a free transfer after FIFA gave foreign players the right to terminate their contracts due to the ongoing conflict with Ukraine.

Philippe Clement is preparing for another busy transfer window as work begins on offloading squad members to free up funds for another spending spree, and no stone will be left unturned, with the Light Blues mooted to reignite their interest in Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland.

Rangers want to sign Sasa Zdjelar

Although Leon Balogun is expected to return from injury soon for Rangers, Clement is facing an injury crisis at Ibrox.

John Souttar and James Tavernier have joined Neraysho Kasanwirjo on the sidelines as Dujon Sterling has been called upon to fill the void in central defence.

Zdjelar can operate both in midfield and at centre-back – his versatility would be a welcome boost for the Gers as they look to navigate both Europa League and Scottish Premiership commitments in January.

The 29-year-old has become a consistent performer in Russia since arriving from his native Serbia, but his availability on a free transfer has alerted the interest of sides across Europe.

German clubs are believed to be monitoring the situation – therefore, Nils Koppen must move swiftly to land what could be a bargain-free transfer for the Gers.

While ex-Rangers midfielder Andy Halliday has urged his former employers to secure the signatures of Dundee duo Lyall Cameron and Josh Mulligan this month, they are running out their contracts and would be available at the end of the season – Clement needs backup now.
