Jon Morosi has suggested that the Chicago Cubs could be in the market for one of the more under-the-radar starting pitchers available in free agency this offseason. Given the Cubs’ existing payroll commitments for 2024, which sit around $140 million, the team is unlikely to make a splash with a top-tier free agent. As such, they may look for value in players who aren’t the biggest names but could provide significant upside.
After a disappointing 83-79 finish despite a managerial change from David Ross to Craig Counsell, it’s clear the Cubs need to make strategic moves to improve their roster. Morosi’s mention of a lesser-known pitcher likely suggests a focus on filling out the rotation with someone who could be a bargain compared to high-priced aces, while still offering solid production.
The Cubs’ front office will need to balance improving their pitching staff with managing their budget, and this type of move could be a smart way to target potential breakout candidates who may not command the kind of large contracts expected by some of the bigger free-agent names.
