Nils Koppen has spoken at length this week in a long-needed interview to clarify what exactly Rangers plan is.
There is a desperation to see silverware back at Ibrox, however, Philippe Clement hasn’t been given the tools needed to succeed as manager when you consider the money being spent across the city.
One area of neglect – with the director post still vacant – is the academy which looked to have turned the corner when Nathan Patterson left Rangers in a £16m deal to join Everton.
Nathan Patterson’s Rangers homecoming no longer needed
The Scotland international has had a torrid time with injuries and must be a frustrated figure having to watch players like Anthony Ralston and Nicky Devlin turning out in his position against Portugal.
According to the media in Liverpool, Patterson isn’t expected to be at Everton for much longer even if Sean Dyche has said that patience is needed with the 23-year old.
After a promising start to his football career, the Auchenhowie graduate has hit a brick wall in the last year but his comments on international duty earlier in 2024 prove that he won’t give up on winning his starting jerseys for club and country back:
“Obviously, I’m not playing as much as I would have liked but, sometimes, that’s just football and I’m not the type of person who’ll just give up.
“I’ll keep training hard, keep working hard, make sure I give myself the best opportunity.”
Why Patterson won’t be back anytime soon
Unfortunately for those of a Light Blue persuasion who want Patterson back at Rangers, and the player himself, it just isn’t going to happen.
James Tavernier has over 18-months left on his current deal with Dujon Sterling seen as the long-term successor.
Add this to how impressive Neraysho Kasanwirjo has been recently and his rumoured option to buy fee of around £1.5-£2m and it’s easy to see why a move for an injury prone player in a position that Rangers already have three players for is unrealistic.
The next best thing is seeing him fulfill his potential in two different shades of blue.
