With rumors that some egos have gotten “out of control,” Michael Maguire is being tipped to shake up Reece Walsh and the Brisbane Broncos and bring some humility back into the playing group. It’s believed that the Broncos started to buy into their own hype after making the grand final in 2023, and it came back to bite them as they missed the finals completely in 2024.
Under Kevin Walters’ direction, some standards had dropped, and there were concerns about some of the things he was allowing the players to get away with. Before the Broncos’ game against the Titans earlier this season, Walsh allegedly stripped off during a pre-game warm-up on the field. This kind of behavior would never be tolerated under a head coach like Wayne Bennett or Craig Bellamy.
The NRL 360 panel also brought up Walsh’s decision to wear sunglasses in the locker rooms prior to the Panthers game in last year’s grand final, even though it was nighttime. It may come as a harsh shock to some of the younger players, but veteran reporter Dean Ritchie predicted that Maguire would be far more authoritarian than Walters.
“That club needs to be tipped on its head, and Madge will tip it on its head. This week, Ritchie observed, “The egos are out of control.” “That (Reece Walsh donning sunglasses in the nighttime dressing room) is something you won’t see.” I am informing you. Additionally, you won’t notice any nail polish on the athletes’ digits. Madge is going to remark, “You’re kidding.”
Not to insult Reece, but do you think Maguire will put up with this at a night game in the sheds while wearing his Versace sunglasses? Braith Anasta went on. Knowing Madge, I can’t picture it or imagine that he would permit that. Reece has the freedom to do that, and I’m not saying it’s the end of the world. However, I don’t see that occurring. Do you think Madge will be the coach in this situation?
Can Michael Maguire harness Reece Walsh’s potential?
The legendary Broncos player Gorden Tallis stated that Maguire will have to exercise caution to avoid upsetting anyone because the current generation of players is quite different from their predecessors. “I simply believe that you can’t tell them what to wear with all the young athletes these days. Tallis remarked, “You see what they all wear on the Matty Johns couch.” “The labels are all on them. They watch the NFL. They adhere to the basketball players. You see them all enter.
