Brown, a former captain of Scotland and the Hoops, began his coaching career in 2022 with Fleetwood and is currently enjoying success as head coach of Ayr, who are leading the William Hill Championship.
The 39-year-old, who played for Celtic for 14 years, is said to be among the top candidates for the vacant position at top-flight strugglers St Johnstone, who play league leaders Brendan Rodgers’ team on Saturday night.
Whether he stays with the Perth team or not, McGregor is optimistic that his Parkhead skipper predecessor will soon be managing a Premiership team.

Arne Engels has impressed Callum McGregor

We played midfield together for a lot of years, so I know Scott extremely well from my time here. That kind of experience helps you understand people’s motivations, abilities, and level of game understanding. It comes as no surprise that he entered management and has done incredibly well. And I predict that he will work for a Premiership soon.
While McGregor and Brown forged a solid partnership in the Celtic engine room, the team’s supporters are adoring a new midfield player, Arne Engels, a 21-year-old Belgian international who has impressed in his first two games after joining from Augsburg last month.

When I first saw him, I thought, ‘He’s a player, he can play,'” McGregor remarked. He’s quite strong and adept at the ball. However, you still need to show up and perform when the game begins. It has been fantastic for a young guy, who is experienced for his age, to join a team of this magnitude, take two penalties in the first two games, and perform so well right away.
One of the new players who has strengthened the team this summer and contributed to the Hoops’ eight-game winning streak across all competitions is Engels.
“They have a really good team,” McGregor remarked. “The team’s profile is essentially what we want it to be – we’ve got a good balance of speed, power and physicality and the right tactical stuff that we need as well so it’s a really balanced group.

“Time will tell in terms of how well we go on and do, but it certainly has all the hallmarks of a good team and it’s now just about the players delivering that on the pitch.”
