The mural depicts the aftermath of Matilda Cortnee Vine getting the national side into the semi-finals with the thrilling 7-6 penalty shoot-out win over France.

The Matildas finished fourth in the tournament, which more than 18 million Aussies watched last July and August.

One of the Matildas in the mural, Gold Coast’s Tameka Yallop, showed the new installation to her young daughter Harley on Tuesday.

Queensland Premier Steven Miles unveiled the new mural on Tuesday and recalled those “edge-of-your-seat” Matildas matches in Brisbane last year.

“Suncorp Stadium was the backdrop for so many of their sensational moments throughout the tournament, including the quarterfinal win over France,” he said.

“It’s fitting that now their success will be immortalised where the action happened.”

In Queensland, the number of women playing football increased 44 per cent after the World Cup, the government says.

“It’s important that we recognise the outstanding achievement of the Matildas for the next generation – inspiring more women and girls to get involved in football,” Miles said.

The mural joins the bronze statues of Queensland sports heroes outside the stadium.
