Rangers are interested in signing Brighton winger Jeremy Sarmiento before the 30 August transfer deadline, according to The Fourth Official.

The outlet reported via YouTube on Wednesday (28 August) that the Light Blues alongside other Scottish Premiership and English Championship clubs are keen to secure the attacker’s services this summer.

While a deal for the Ecuador international isn’t thought to be close at this stage of the window, there is a belief that there is a deal there to be struck for Philippe Clement’s side before the end of the window.

Speaking on YouTube, The Fourth Official said: “Now Sarmiento played for Brighton last night in the League Cup and scored as part of a 4-0 victory for Brighton yesterday.

“It’s my understanding that Rangers are still interested in Sarmiento along with several other clubs. Certainly nowhere near deal done on that one.

“There’s certainly interest in him from other Premiership clubs and other teams in the Championship, but I believe there may well be a deal there to be done on that one.”

Will Jeremy Sarmiento exit Brighton amid Rangers transfer rumours?

Clement is clearly keen to strengthen the wide options in his squad this summer, particularly now that Scott Wright looks set to call time on his spell in Glasgow and move to League One with Birmingham City [The Fourth Official, 28 August].

Sarmiento may not have experience north of the border, but the 22-year-old played a major role as Ipswich Town won promotion to the Premier League last season, scoring four goals and laying on one assist in 22 games.

Brighton and the Gers do have a good working relationship after the Light Blues signed Abdallah Sima on loan last season, so it seems likely that the two clubs could be able to agree a long deal that suits all parties involved.

It will be interesting to see whether or not Rangers push to get a loan switch over the line before the window slams shut on Friday 30 August.

Time is running out for Clement and his recruitment team to win the race for Sarmineto’s signature.
