The Sunderland youngster could still yet turn around his fortunes at the Stadium of Light.
With the summer transfer deadline fast approaching, Sunderland will be looking to wrap up their business, with attackers most certainly taking priority at this stage.
Any hopes to get a deal over the line for long-term target Alexandre Mendy appear to be dwindling, and as a result a deal for Tom Cannon has been pursued as a decent alternative, with Sunderland lodging a £5million bid for the Leicester City striker.
As well as strikers, wingers may be towards the top of the priority list for Regis Le Bris’ side this summer following the sale of Jack Clarke to Premier League side Ipswich Town, leaving wide options fairly scarce.
The signing of Ian Poveda was made earlier this summer, however the Colombian international is set to be eased back into contention after coming back from injury, leaving current wide options at just Patrick Roberts, Romaine Mundle and Jewison Bennette.
Bennette has been out of favour so far with French boss Le Bris, however there still is a chance he could turn his Sunderland career around in the coming days.
Sunderland winger Jewison Bennette could be given a chance despite League One links
The Costa Rican has been linked with a move to League One side Reading following the realisation that he currently is not part of Le Bris’ plans.
However, Monday evening saw Bennette on form for Sunderland U21’s as he bagged a brace in a 3-2 win against Middlesbrough, where he showed that he has the goalscoring qualities for a left-winger.
As a result of the Clarke exit, on top of Bennette’s brilliant performance at youth level, Kristjaan Speakman should certainly be considering the future of the winger and whether he could still make a difference for Le Bris’ side and potentially come back into favour.
Jewison Bennette deserves chance in Sunderland first team
The Black Cats winger’s first season with Sunderland very much threw up a mix bag as he scored just the one goal in the 2022/23 season, however was predominantly used off the bench as he registered just 236 minutes of game time in the Championship.
It was clearly difficult for the 20-year-old to adapt to English football at such a young age, however with a couple extra years of experience under his belt, he could be more suited to the Championship, and the lack of options on the left at this moment should undoubtedly lead to him getting his opportunity.
New attacking arrival Wilson Isidor can also do a job at left-wing, however the opportunity should be handed to Bennette after what has been a difficult couple years for the youngster, and there is very little doubt that he can showcase his talent in a Sunderland squad that is certainly more full of confidence in comparison to last season.
