Sunderland and Luton Town are the latest to show interest in Leicester City striker Tom Cannon, according to reporter Alan Nixon.

Sunderland and Luton Town have had very different starts to the 2024/25 Championship campaign but both will be hoping to end the summer transfer window on a high.

The Black Cats and the Hatters are both still in need of new additions and will have irons in the fire in their bid to beat the deadline. The window slams shut at 11pm on Friday, so time is running out to get deals done.

Despite the strong start by Regis Le Bris’ side, there’s no doubt new stars are needed. Strikers have been high on the list of priorities and a Jack Clarke heir must now be found.

Now, in a new Patreon report from Alan Nixon, Sunderland have been credited with interest in Leicester City striker Tom Cannon alongside Luton Town.

The Black Cats and the Hatters are claimed to have joined the likes of Sheffield United and Stoke City in eyeing Cannon. The Republic of Ireland international could move on from Leicester before the window’s end and after rumours of a loan, a permanent move could materialise.

He won’t come cheap though, with a £7m price tag slapped on his head.

Sheffield United are ‘determined’ to get the deal done but Stoke City have the ‘financial muscle’. Sunderland need to move soon to catch their rivals with Luton Town also joining the race.

A late move awaits?

Despite the striker shortage at Leicester City, it is seeming more and more likely that Cannon will be moving on from the Premier League club before the end of the summer transfer window.

And, with Sunderland and Luton Town joining Sheffield United and Stoke City in the multi-club battle, it seems more and more likely that the Championship will be his destination.

Strikers don’t come cheap these days and all four sides are in need of more options at the top of the pitch. The decision will likely come down to finances, with a loan deal still a possibility but a permanent signing sure to be the preference of his admirers.

It’s the Blades and the Potters who have been on his trail for some time, so the Black Cats and the Hatters may have to make a strong move if one of them are to win the race for Cannon’s signature.

Championship ready

While spending as much as £7m on a striker has risks, Cannon is a player ready to go at Championship level. He has found joy in this division before and will be backed to do so again.

Injury and competition meant action was limited last season for the 21-year-old but he still managed three goals and two assists in his 16 games, many of which were brief substitute appearances. Cannon was at his best on loan at Preston, notching eight goals and an assist in 21 outings.

That was just his first senior season too, so he should have come on further since that stint.

That comes at a cost, but it remains to be seen who of Sunderland, Luton Town, Sheffield United and Stoke City are willing to pay it.
