Norwich City face uphill battle in race for £26m Real Madrid man

Norwich City could miss out on Real Madrid attacking midfielder Reinier, according to reporter Manoj Daswani, for Spanish newspaper El Dia.

Norwich City have been credited with interest in Los Blancos’ Brazilian Reinier by sources such as The Athletic in recent days. The Athletic’s Mario Cortegana wrote that the 22-year-old Brazilian would not travel with Real Madrid Castilla to Marbella.

Cortegana wrote that this was ‘pending the resolution of his future’ with the Canaries showing a concrete interest in the Brazilian youngster. The Championship outfit were said to be looking to explore a loan with an option to buy deal for Reinier.

However, El Dia reporter Daswani says that La Segunda side CD Tenerife have entered the chase. The second-tier outfit have been permitted by the league to sign one more player and the signing does not come with the need for a player to leave the club.

Daswani adds that Norwich City had their first bid for Brazilian Reinier rejected by Real Madrid. Reinier’s agents have offered his services to top-tier sides in Spain.

He goes on to say that if no top-tier team wants him, then Tenerife would be ‘well positioned’ to complete a deal on Wednesday or Thursday this week.

Stumbling block in Reinier chase

Reinier cost Real Madrid around £26m when Los Blancos bought him from Brazilian side Flamengo in late January 2020. The youngster has since been out on a series of loans to Borussia Dortmund, Girona and Frosinone.

The Brasilia-born youngster has represented Brazil at youth levels from U16 to U23s. In 24 games for the Seleção, he has scored 12 goals.

He has scored for all the loan teams that he has played for. He has also appeared in three of Europe’s top leagues and has experience of Champions League football.

Norwich City have lost several attacking talent in the current transfer window. The likes of Gabriel Sara, Adam Idah and Jonathan Rowe have all left Carrow Road.

Replacing that calibre of player is always going to be a challenge. Norwich’s move for Reinier Jesus would be a fantastic move if they could pull it off, but things are looking tricky after an offer was turned down and time in the window runs out.

Some hope in Reinier chase?

Tenerife’s interest in him is a stumbling block, one that the Canaries could very easily fall on. In their favour, El Dia reporter Daswani does admit that Tenerife are looking at Reinier as a plan B.

This is in case they cannot agree on a move for another of their targets – Rayo Vallecano’s Joni Montiel, for whom several bids have been made.

That should give Norwich City renewed hope that, if they push, they could land Brazilian Reinier who hasn’t made an impact at the Santiago Bernabeu.

If there is any hope that the Canaries could land him, they should push for a move. The young Brazilian could be a revelation in the Championship for Johannes Hoff Thorup’s side.
