Coventry City striker opens up on ‘dramatic’ transfer decision

Coventry City transfer news from CoventryLive as Brandon Thomas-Asante explains transfer decision to snub Championship rivals Hull for the Sky Blues

Brandon Thomas-Asante has spoken about why he chose Coventry City over Championship rivals Hull in what he describes as a “dramatic” transfer to the Sky Blues.

The 25-year-old admits the hours before his move to the CBS Arena were something of a whirlwind as he came close to signing for the Tigers. Hull had agreed a fee with West Brom and terms with the striker while club officials had scheduled in a medical, but at the last minute, the former Baggies ace opted to join Mark Robins’ side despite the East Yorkshire side believing a deal had been struck.

Thomas-Asante, who lives in the Midlands, opted to turn down the move to the MKM Stadium and link up with Coventry, and has featured in all three of their Championship games so far, playing 65 minutes in a defeat, win and draw.

Speaking about those final hours, Thomas-Asante admits it was frantic, but says he has full respect for Hull’s owner Acun Ilicali, manager Tim Walter and his staff, who worked so hard to try and convince him that a switch up north was the right move for him.

“It was a very dramatic day, it felt like a deadline day although it was nowhere near it but as it happens for players, you sort of assess your options,” he told Sky Sports. “I was fortunate enough to have a degree of choice. There was specific interest, Coventry where I am now, Hull was another really viable option, a strong option.

“I can only speak highly of their owner, the manager and everyone at Hull but for me, it was about weighing up what was the best next step, being at Coventry right now is a place that has so much ambition, I’m a player who wants to play in the Premier League and speaking to the manager, he believed that I could do that under his guidance.

“We’ve got a squad that’s showing signs that we really want to push, it did so well in the FA Cup last year, got to the semi-finals and in the league, they gave us trouble (at West Brom) when I played against them it was a really tough game as well. I can definitely see this year as being a positive one, there’s so much ambition. I believe that we can go on and do really great things this season and I want to be a part of that.”
