Sunderland look set to complete their fifth summer signing.

Sunderland haven’t had much luck in the summer transfer window this year, with four new players having arrived so far.

But despite that, new manager Regis Le Bris has impressed, guiding Sunderland to a perfect start to the 2024/25 Championship season.

The Black Cats have beaten Cardiff City and Sheffield Wednesday in the league, having yet to concede a goal either.

It looks as though the club are nearing a transfer blow, however, with Ipswich Town agreeing a deal to sign Jack Clarke.

It seems likely that Clarke may be left out of the side to face Burnley this weekend, amid a pending move to the Premier League with newcomers Ipswich.

Sunderland though look like they’ll bolster their front-line before the August 30th transfer deadline, with a number of strikers currently on their radar.

Sunderland remain keen on Alexandre Mendy and have also added Zenit striker Wilson Isidor to their wanted list.

On Thursday, it was revealed that Red Bull Salzburg striker Roko Simic was set to undergo a medical with Sunderland.

Sunderland in advanced talks to sign Roko Simic

Now, Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has provided some clarity on the deal for Simic.

Downie has confirmed reports from Europe that Sunderland are keen on signing Simic from Red Bull Salzburg.

Downie posted on X, revealing that Sunderland are in ‘advanced talks’ to sign Simic, and that the Black Cats are hopeful about signing the 20-year-old who’s now holding ‘face-to-face’ talks with the Sunderland hierarchy.

However, Downie makes no mention of a medical or whether or not Simic is currently in England.

Sunderland fans have learned valuable lesson in transfers this summer

For Sunderland, whether it’s an outgoing player or an incoming one, they won’t believe it until they see it.

When Mendy was being heavily linked with a move to Sunderland earlier this summer, it was claimed that he was undergoing a medical at the Stadium of Light, yet he remains with Caen.

The fact that Downie hasn’t made any mention of a Simic medical may suggest that there’s still a way to go in this deal, so Sunderland fans shouldn’t get their hopes up too soon.

But it looks like an exciting signing for the Black Cats and Kristjaan Speakman, who’ll want to give Le Bris some extra firepower with Clarke looking set to leave.

Sunderland vs Burnley kicks off at 3pm on at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.
