Coventry City lose top youngster as Manchester City swoop in

Coventry City have lost young star Marlow Barrett with Manchester City swooping to complete a deal, as per Fabrizio Romano.

Coventry City have had some big success in the transfer market in recent years.

Sizeable sales of key men like Gustavo Hamer and Viktor Gyokeres have financed a rebuild of Mark Robins’ squad over the past year or so, turning them into promotion contenders after just missing out in the play-off final in 2022.

This summer has been another fruitful one with some eye-catching additions made. However, it looks as though the Sky Blues are set to lose an upcoming prospect in Marlow Barrett.

Writing on X, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano states that the Coventry City starlet has been the subject of a completed deal with Premier League giants Manchester City.

He’ll join the esteemed youth ranks in the north west, departing the Sky Blues to do so.

It was said earlier this summer that City were set to win the race for Barrett and it now looks as though the move has been sealed. It is not said which age group he will join, but Barrett will be looking to work his way through the fantastic setup at the Etihad Stadium.

Heading elsewhere

Like every club, Coventry City will hold the aim of producing top young players from their academy ranks to eventually bring them into the first-team fold.

Those academy grown, hometown players hold dear places in fans’ hearts and the very best can go on to be big financial assets too. The Sky Blues will have held that hope for Barrett as he made his way through the academy.

However, for EFL clubs, losing top youngsters to sides higher up the food chain is an inevitability. Plenty of starlets make big moves to Premier League sides and Barrett looks as though he’s one of the latest to earn a transfer.

He’ll move on with the best wishes of those who helped him develop at Coventry City as he looks to maximise his potential with Manchester City.

The window ahead

While Barrett looks to head for Manchester City, it seems as though the window could end fairly quietly for Coventry City after getting some more business done recently.

They signed Belgian prospect Norman Bassette from SM Caen recently as a new option up top but otherwise, Robins’ ranks seem fairly well stocked.

Oliver Dovin, Luis Binks, Jack Rudoni, Raphael Borges Rodrigues, Brandon Thomas-Asante and the aforementioned Bassette have all joined this summer. Departures could dictate further signings, but it seems unlikely that there will be a lively end to the window at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
