The Black Cats have been credited with interest in Zenit St Petersburg striker Wilson Isidor
Sunderland are lining up a shock move for striker Wilson Isidor on loan, according to quotes attributed to his Zenit St Petersburg club chairman Alexander Medvedev.
And in another stunning twist, the Alexandre Mendy saga could be off as far as the Black Cats are concerned. Isidor, 23, has made a good reputation for himself in Russia since moving from France in 2022, although he could now form part of the Black Cats’ attacking strengths if reports come to fruition.
According to Russian news outlet SE, Medvedev has said: “Wilson Isidore on his way to Sunderland, England.” That stark assertion could not be clearer but it seems any deal would be an initial loan arrangement.
Sending money to Russia is a potential stumbling block if it ever came to sorting a deal beyond a loan spell. But for now, it seems the deal could be close.
Isidor started his career at Rennes before moving to Monaco as a youngster. He didn’t really make his mark until a loan spell at Bastia in the 2020/21 season, though. Since then he has found a home in Russia, spending two years at Lokomotiv Moscow before joining Zenit St Petersburg on loan last season. They were obligated to make that deal a permanent one this summer, but they appear to be happy to move him on again almost immediately.
If Isidor does arrive at Sunderland, it had seemed likely he would be joined by Mendy. The 30-year-old has been the Black Cats’ top striker target all summer, and the stalemate appeared to have been broken by the Wearsiders increasing their bid to around 2.5million Euros this week, which should have met the demands of his French club FC Caen.
But that has been thrown into confusion as French journalist Mohamed Toubache-Ter has stated on social media: “Sunderland. the new offer is one week old and is not at this amount.
“Secondly, the Sunderland board contacted the Stade Malherbe Caen board to announce that Sunderland had just decided to withdraw from the case. “Strategy? To be continued.”
Whether or not the Mendy deal happens, at least the development of Isidor is a positive sign for Sunderland fans. The Sunderland hierarchy have been around the clock to bolster their forward line. It remains to be seen what impact Isidor’s arrival will have should he arrive on Wearside.
