Rangers have shown an interest in signing Benfica winger Tiago Gouveia ahead of the transfer deadline, according to Joshua Barrie.

The Rangers Review journalist reported via YouTube on Wednesday (21 August, 15:50) that while the Light Blues are interested in the 23-year-old, that doesn’t mean they are able to sign him immediately.

Philippe Clement’s side is lining up potential targets before the transfer window slams shut in case they are able to make further additions to their playing squad in the coming days.

Speaking on The Rangers Review YouTube channel Barrie said: “I think on the latter point, it is a player that Rangers have shown an interest in as is the case throughout the summer.

“There’s a lot of caveats to their interest. I know caveat is the word of the summer at this point at Rangers but the fact is they can’t always go and sign a player right now, it’s about getting players lined up.

“That’s what you saw happen with Vaclav Cerny and to a degree Robin Propper as well.”

Will Tiago Gouveia exit Benfica amid Rangers transfer interest?

From the moment Clement arrived at Ibrox, the Belgian has been eager to play with wingers in his system, even when the Gers have had very few options at their disposal over the last year.

In Cerny and Oscar Cortes, the Rangers boss has managed to find two very good, natural wingers capable of providing some genuine quality from out wide, but both players are yet to get fully up to speed.

Gouveia would add some more competition in those areas and ensure that the Gers have another option at their disposal rather than having to call on the likes of Scott Wright to fill in when Cortes or Cerny are unavailable.

Whether or not the Light Blues will have the financial muscle to get a deal over the line remains to be seen, but this deal will likely be dependent on whether or not the Gers can move some high-earners off of their wage bill.
