The winger’s previous deal had been due to expire next summer, and there had been talk this transfer window of a potential move to Championship clubs like Cardiff and Hull

Kasey McAteer has committed his future to Leicester City by signing a new four-year contract.

The homegrown winger’s previous deal was due to expire next summer, but after making an impact in City’s promotion campaign, he has been tied down to 2028. It puts to an end any suggestion he could be sold by the club this summer amid Championship interest, although he could still be loaned out.

McAteer had his first real season in the senior set-up last term, showing he had a knack for finding the net, scoring seven goals in 26 outings. In Monday night’s 1-1 draw with Spurs, he came off the bench and provided a burst of energy for Steve Cooper’s side, showing he has a role to play as competition for the likes of Abdul Fatawu, Stephy Mavididi, and Bobby De Cordova-Reid this season.

Joining the club aged eight and making his debut under Brendan Rodgers in December 2021, McAteer then spent time out on loan at Forest Green and Wimbledon before returning to City’s senior set-up last season. He made a quick impact, scoring a match-winning brace at Rotherham before netting at Liverpool and Southampton. Hamstring injuries stopped him featuring more regularly, but he returned late in the season and scored at Preston to help spark title celebrations.

The 22-year-old was the stand-out player in the City squad to be in the final 12 months of his contract, but is now signed up until 2028. Cardiff and Hull had both been keen on McAteer, and while he may still head to the Championship, especially if City make attacking signings, it will now only be a loan move, rather than a permanent one.
