Rangers signing another midfielder before the transfer window shuts would take Connor Barron’s game to new levels, believes Barry Ferguson.

The former Gers midfielder was thrilled with the 21-year-old’s performance against St Johnstone in the cup game on 17 August.

Ferguson has tipped the former Aberdeen play to go on and become an important figure at Ibrox in the future.

He said, via the Daily Record on 19 August: “I thought when he came on (Connor Barron) against St Johnstone that he was excellent. He has real energy, I love his attitude and I think – and I keep going back to this – but if they get hopefully another midfielder in who has that bit of experience, you can see Barron go up levels.

“I really like him. If you look back to last year he wasn’t always a certain starter for Aberdeen. But he’s come in, hit the ground running and I just love his attitude. He looks to me as if he is desperate to learn and I thought he showed a real appetite on Saturday. Going forward hopefully he can turn into a really good midfielder for Rangers.”

Rangers have to sign a new midfielder before the window shuts

Signing another midfielder before the transfer window shuts is paramount as it would complement Barron’s youthful energy and potential, providing a balance in midfield that could elevate the team’s performance.

This new signing could offer tactical versatility, allowing for better control in possession and defensive solidity, which are crucial in both domestic and European competitions.

Moreover, with the departure of seasoned players, there’s a gap in leadership and game management that an experienced midfielder could fill, mentoring younger talents like Barron and ensuring continuity in performance during crucial matches.

This signing would not only enhance competition for places, pushing Barron to improve further but also provide depth, which is essential for maintaining form throughout a long season, especially considering the physical demands of the Scottish Premiership and the potential for injuries or suspensions.

Hopefully, work is ongoing on new signings behind the scenes and an official announcement can then be made in the next few days.
