The Sky Blues will face United again after their 3-2 league victory on Friday
Coventry City’s second-round Carabao Cup tie against Oxford United will be played on Tuesday, August 27 at the CBS Arena.
The match will be the Sky Blues’ second outing against newly-promoted Oxford in the space of 10 days – they won 3-2 on Friday thanks to a late Haji Wright goal after a Will Vaulks mistake.
The tie will kick-off at 7.45pm, with ticket information to be confirmed in due course. The Sky Blues successfully negotiated a tricky tie at Bristol City in the first round, Ellis Simms scoring the decisive goal.
Mark Robins will draw confidence from his side’s previous exploits in cup competitions after they made it to the FA Cup semi-finals last season, losing in controversial circumstances to Manchester United at Wembley.
They had recovered from a three-goal deficit to level the scores only to have a last-minute extra-time “winner” denied by VAR before losing a penalty shoot-out. Coventry have not won a major trophy since their 1987 FA Cup success, but supporters will be daring to dream if they can triumph over Oxford in the second round of the League Cup.
Of the draw, Robins said: “Bristol City, Oxford, Bristol City, Oxford… I think we played Sheffield Wednesday four times last year. It’s just strange! Football throws these anomalies up… It is what it is, but it’s a home draw nonetheless. We’re looking forward to it.”
