Georginio Rutter’s move to Brighton is expected to go through in the next few hours and Joe Rodon has delivered his verdict on the Frenchman’s exit after Leeds United’s draw against West Brom.
Rodon and Leeds improved considerably on Saturday and while they lacked the punch that the likes of Rutter and Crysencio Summerville would normally provide, they were much more impressive defensively.
The back five of Illan Meslier, Jayden Bogle, Rodon, Pascal Struijk and Junior Firpo had conceded three goals on the opening day, and then three more went in against Middlesbrough as changers were made.
But at West Brom, a side that took four points off Leeds last season, Daniel Farke’s men were much more resolute defensively. Rodon himself had endured a poor start to 2024-25, but improved greatly yesterday.
Rodon speaks honestly on Rutter exit as Brighton move all set
For a player like Rodon, these summer exits must be frustrating. The Wales star chose to ignore Premier League interest to return to Leeds on a permanent basis, with Ipswich tabled a £10m bid for Rodon.
But since his arrival, Leeds have sold Glen Kamara, Summerville and Rutter. He will be questioning why they have been sold and if Leeds have enough to meet his ambitions, and get promoted this season.
Speaking to Sky Sports (17/08, 2.37PM), Rodon responded when asked about Rutter’s move to Premier League side Brighton. A deal that has seen The Seagulls activate a £40m clause in his Elland Road deal.
“Everyone knows how important he was to us, but, like I said, we can’t look at that now. We can only control what’s with us and what we can do is stick together and play together,” Rodon said, on Rutter.
What Rutter said about his future earlier this month before exit
Rutter is widely eccentric, taking steps into the world of music, fashion and even becoming a horse race owner. The club-record signing from Hoffenheim also started his YouTube channel earlier this month.
In a documentary-style piece published at the beginning of the month, Rutter finished the 20-minute video by explaining he would give his all to help Leeds get promoted but now, he is off to Brighton.
“Unfortunately, it’s not what we wanted, but it’s not an end. After a rest, it’s time to get back to work, more determined than ever so next year will be a better season for me. I’ll be ready and give it my all.”
