Premier League giants ‘close in on’ long-term Sunderland striker target in surprise move – journalist

Sunderland are still searching for a striker after another target is set to be snapped up by Manchester City.

The Black Cats’ have shrewdly brought in the likes of Alan Browne and Ian Poveda, who will provide Championship experience, whilst also doing well to retain the services of all key players, including the likes of Anthony Patterson, Jack Clarke and Chris Rigg.

However, on the striker front, Sunderland are still incredibly light in numbers, with the never-ending Alexandre Mendy saga still yet to meet its final conclusion.

Regis Le Bris started young striker Eliezer Mayenda up front in Sunderland’s opening Championship clash with Cardiff City, where he played fairly well, despite being unable to find the net.

Although Mayenda is sufficient enough for a short-term option whilst options are considered, there still has to be urgency on Sunderland’s part to get a deal done before the end of the transfer window.

Other options to bring to the Stadium of Light have been considered, and one that was tipped for a move to Sunderland earlier this summer is now set for a move to Premier League champions Manchester City.

Former Sunderland target Divin Mubama set for move to Manchester City

The Black Cats’ wait for a striker to come through the doors on Wearside will carry on as a former transfer target looks set to sign for Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

Per Fabrizio Romano on X, Manchester City are set to ‘close in on Divin Mubama deal’ following his release from West Ham United earlier this summer, where he rejected a new contract.

The 19-year-old, who played on five occasions for West ham United in the Premier League last season, and also was handed four Europa League appearances, was gaining interest from potential suitors from across Europe, including Sunderland, per The Athletic.

Sunderland must act quickly in the next couple weeks to attain a striker

It is safe to say that the time for Sunderland bringing their first striker through the door should have been done weeks, if not a month ago, which would have given Le Bris the best opportunity to mould an attacker into his playing style, as well as having the time to do so.

But now Sunderland find themselves in a situation where they are relying on Mayenda as their sole striker, whilst having unproven attacker Nazariy Rusyn on the bench to replace him.

Le Bris’ side performed well in their opening game against Cardiff City, however against the sides in the higher echelons, it will become evident that Sunderland don’t have a proven scorer at this level, and that is something that must be corrected quickly by Kristjaan Speakman, and is a real cause for concern that it hasn’t already been taken care of.
