Norwich City prospect Oli Newman is set to complete a move to Southampton, according to The Secret Scout.

Norwich City have seen a whole host of academy prospects work their way through the ranks and into the first-team over the years. There will be players hopeful of breaking into the side under the new management of Johannes Hoff Thorup too.

Several young players were involved in the EFL Cup win over Stevenage on Tuesday night. Brad Hills and Jaden Warner started at centre-back with Liam Gibbs, Gabe Forsyth and Elliot Myles all getting action off the bench.

One player who will have their eyes on a senior breakthrough in the years to come is 16-year-old Oli Newman.

However, it seems the Welsh and English youth international’s future may lay away from Norwich City.

Writing on X, reputable youth football news source The Secret Scout revealed that Newman is set to make a move to the Premier League with Southampton. No terms of the deal are mentioned, but it seems the Canaries are set to lose the prospect to the Saints.

Newman has one appearance for Norwich City’s U18s to his name in the age group level of the Premier League. He has been capped six times by Wales’ U16s too.

Heading elsewhere?

Norwich City will have hoped that youngster Newman would follow the well-trodden path from their academy to the first-team in the years to come. It’s a road many have followed to great success, either locking down places in the senior ranks or earning big moves elsewhere.

Nevertheless, the teenager looks poised to move on before that can happen.

Few will dispute the decision though. Southampton are one of the best clubs in the country for developing young players, so it will be a great place for Newman to continue to grow as he looks to forge a career in the senior game.

For the Canaries, the focus will switch to developing those who will be staying onboard. If any funds are raised from Newman’s move, you would think it will go back into the academy to help their next stars progress.

Meanwhile at first-team level…

As the academy players gear up for the new campaign, the Norwich City first-team will be looking to get their first league win under Thorup this weekend.

They face Blackburn Rovers this weekend, who have started the season in free-scoring form. They beat Derby County 4-2 on the opening day before a 6-1 thrashing of a youthful Stockport County on Tuesday night.

Norwich will have been encouraged by the win over Stevenage, though three goals conceded makes for another fairly leaky display.

Onel Hernandez scored twice while wingers Borja Sainz and Abu Kamara also found the back of the net.
