Sunderland look set to lose one or two players before the end of the summer transfer window.
The summer transfer window officials shuts on August 30th, and for Sunderland, there’s becoming a real sense of urgency to get some business done.
Sunderland remain in desperate need of a striker, as they have for the last few transfer windows now.
Manager Regis Le Bris has suggested that he’d like a new striker before the summer is over, but key Sunderland target Alexandre Mendy is reportedly training with Caen ahead of the new Ligue 2 season.
Meanwhile, potential outgoings at the Stadium of Light may take some precedence, despite the desperate need for a new striker.
Leicester City are keen on Pierre Ekwah right now. Meanwhile, links to the likes of Jobe Bellingham and Anthony Patterson appear to have gone somewhat cold.
Jack Clarke has Premier League interest, but his links to the English top flight have also gone cold in the last few weeks.
Jack Clarke contract talk debunked amid Sunderland social media rumours
Recently, there’s been rumours on social media that Clarke has signed a new two-year deal with the Black Cats, extending his current contract which expires in 2026.
But an emerging report from Sunderland Echo has played that down, reiterating the fact that Sunderland and Clarke remain at an impasse with regards to a new contract.
The same report adds that Clarke is ‘unlikely to force a move’ but remains ‘open’ to potentially discussing a Premier League transfer.
The likes of Crystal Palace, Ipswich Town, and Southampton have all been linked with the 23-year-old this summer.
Sunderland should cash in on one man and keep Jack Clarke
Amid this ongoing striker search, and with Sunderland not having too many goal scorers in their first-team squad right now, keeping Clarke until next summer seems like a sensible bet for Kristjaan Speakman and the Sunderland owners.
But the club could trim their squad in other areas and give themselves some potential spending money with the sale of Ekwah.
He’s one of several names fighting for a starting spot in the midfield, though Le Bris’ Dan Neil-Alan Browne partnership from the opening day looks like it could be a regular feature.
Selling Ekwah could give Sunderland money to go out and buy a striker in the final weeks of the window, with the Black Cats so far struggling on that front.
Clarke meanwhile; he’s valued at £25million and that could be hard for Sunderland to turn down.
And with no new striker in as of yet, it certainly makes the Clarke saga a bit more intriguing, with Premier League clubs bound to make some last-minute purchases this summer.
