Rangers have appointed a former Celtic man as their new head of marketing, according to 4 Lads Had A Dream.

The Gers account responded via X on 14 August after questions from fans over Blaine McConnell’s history at Parkhead to report that “sadly” he started with the Light Blues the previous day.

The move has emerged amid turmoil at Ibrox as Philippe Clement’s side are playing away from home at Hampden Park, where they were knocked out of the Champions League in controversial fashion by Dynamo Kyiv the night before.

As a result, a miserable Four Lads wrote: Sadly it seems to be true. Started yesterday, head of marketing I believe.

“At this moment I’m genuinely just sick of the nonsense, used to be one day without any nonsense now I’d settle for 5 mins”.

Blaine McConnell appointed new Rangers head of marketing

The unfortunate fact is that with the club in its current state anyone who might help matters on or off the pitch can’t be ignored.

If McConnell can drive financial improvements at Ibrox in the marketing department then his Celtic allegiances should mean little, just as possible signings on the pitch who support the Hoops have been backed this summer with the squad in such need of help.

But form a PR perspective it was always going to go down like a lead balloon for an appointment like this to emerge at a time when fans are already seeing another season start to unravel.

The Belgian is stuck having to sell in order to buy but unable to move players on quick enough to strengthen a playing staff which threw away the title race to Celtic last term and has only got weaker in the months since.

Factor in the building work farce at Ibrox which has forced the Light Blues to decamp to Hampden Park, and the fact that there is still no CEO in place after James Bisgrove’s sudden exit to Saudi Arabia [Scottish Sun, 30 May] and there is an air of chaos around the club.

McConnell himself is hardly the real issue but a potentially controversial choice when fans have little positive news to hold on to could hardly have been timed worse.
