Sheffield Wednesday kicked off their Championship campaign with a resounding win.

Sheffield Wednesday hosted Plymouth Argyle in the opening game of the 2024/25 season on Sunday.

And after a positive summer in the transfer market, Danny Rohl’s side claimed a huge 4-0 win vs Plymouth Argyle.

Jamal Lowe scored on his Sheffield Wednesday debut whilst Josh Windass and Michael Smith also got on the score-sheet, with an own goal taking the tally up to four.

The Owls now find themselves top of the Championship table after the very first game of the season.

Fans are quietly confident about seeing their side challenge for a spot in the top six this season.

Sheffield Wednesday have been out of the Premier League for coming up to 25 years now, having last finished in the Championship’s top six in 2017.

But talkSPORT pundit Jeff Stelling has now given his verdict on Sheffield Wednesday’s promotion chances under Rohl this season, and he’s played down the Owls’ chances of a shock push for the Premier League.

Jeff Stelling plays down Sheffield Wednesday promotion chances this season

Speaking on talkSPORT on Monday, pundit Stelling was quizzed on whether or not he thinks Sheffield Wednesday can make a realistic promotion push this season.

He said: “I doubt it, I doubt it, you know, but they are going to have a heck of a better season than they did last season. That’s for sure.

“When you are looking for sides to go [up to the Premier League], you are inevitably going to look at Leeds United despite their start and the sides who came down, Burnley, Luton and Sheffield United because they have got parachute payments and so on and so forth, but we shall see.”

On the opening round of the season, Leeds United drew 3-3 at home to Portsmouth, Sheffield United won away at Preston North End, and Burnley won 4-1 away at Luton Town.

One thing will be key if Sheffield Wednesday are to challenge for promotion this season

Like Stelling says, Sheffield Wednesday certainly look set for a much-improved season this time round.

That win over Plymouth may have been the most complete Sheffield Wednesday performance we’ve seen under Rohl, and indeed in a couple of years.

For the Owls, though, whether or not the earn promotion this season could depend largely on the January transfer window.

That’s often where promotion contenders are made or broken; for Sheffield Wednesday last season, it was where they secured their safety with the loan signings of James Beadle, Ian Poveda and Ike Ugbo.

Between now and January will show Rohl where the gaps in his side remain, then January will give the Owls a chance to plug those gaps.
