Dominic Iorfa made it three clean sheets in his last three competitive appearances for Sheffield Wednesday.
The backline ended the 2023-24 campaign strongly and looked entirely unnerved as Sheffield Wednesday claimed a 4-0 win over Plymouth Argyle yesterday.
Danny Rohl welcomed new signings Max Lowe and Yan Valery into the starting line-up, with the usual pairing of Iorfa and Di’Shon Bernard sandwiched in between them.
Iorfa saw very little action in his own half as the Yorkshire outfit dominated on home soil, but he was still deservedly praised for his contribution.
The 29-year-old completed the second-most accurate passes on the pitch (40), won the joint-most dribbles (2), won the most headers (6) and made two clearances.
Iorfa showered in praise by Sheffield Wednesday teammates
Iorfa showed exactly why he should be a fixture in Wednesday’s starting line-up and his teammates clearly believed so too.
The centre-back took to Instagram to share his delight at the result, writing: “Great start to the season, 4 goals and a clean sheet!”
Iorfa was then flooded with support from both current and former Wednesday players.
Liam Palmer wrote: “Keiser 🔥” – which translates to ’emperor’.
Charlie McNeill wrote: “👏👏”.
Jamal Lowe said: “Clean drip”.
Josh Windass wrote: “😍🔥”.
Marvin Johnson sent: “👏🏽”.
Barry Bannan said: “👏👏👏”.
Former Wednesday defender Chey Dunkley wrote: “🔥 Franco Baresi”.
Baresi spent 20 years in AC Milan’s senior team and made 719 appearances – winning six Serie A titles, three European Cup/Champions League titles and four Supercoppa Italiana, as well as finishing as the Ballon d’Or runner-up in 1989 and being named as the 1999 AC Milan Player of the Century.
Can Iorfa keep his place in the starting line-up?
It is a huge compliment from Iorfa from his former teammate and one that should urge him into carry on his spectacular form into the rest of the season.
Rohl has previously claimed he wants to bring a new centre-back to the club and it is one that will likely challenge Iorfa for his place in the starting line-up.
While they are yet to bid for such a player, the Owls defender will be eager to impress and keep out any potential competition.
If he continues to play like he did at Hillsborough yesterday, then there is no reason for Rohl to drop him.
Either way, it would be useful to bring in another defensive reinforcement to add competition and squad depth ahead of another busy campaign.
