Noel Egan expects “severe” consequences for two referees who were arrested before Rangers’ Champions League clash with Dynamo Kyiv.

The ex-FIFA official has blasted the “stupid” behaviour of Bartosz Frankowski and Tomasz Musial.

Both officials were due to be part of VAR for Rangers’ 1-1 draw with Dynamo Kyiv on Wednesday (7 August).

However, both officials were removed from UEFA’s match information on the day of the match with it emerging later that the pair had been arrested for stealing a stop sign (via The Scottish Sun, 7 August).

And Egan – speaking exclusively to Ibrox News – was left stunned by what had happened.

“You don’t expect to read things like that at all,” Egan said.

“All referees are human, but you wouldn’t expect something like that to happen. It is stupid and those referees should face severe consequences.

“When I was a referee I made sure to take every aspect of the game very seriously. If they want to go out and get themselves arrested after the game then that is on them. But before the game, seriously?

“You need to keep a low profile as a referee. There aren’t three teams on the pitch, there are two teams of footballers. The job of referees is to stop and start the game as soon as possible.

“The best referee is the referee that you never notice. Keep your nose clean and let the two teams do the job, this kind of behaviour is ludicrous.”

Rangers v Dynamo Kyiv controversy leaves ex-FIFA official stunned

It is not every day that two referees are arrested hours before a match they are due to be a part of.

Luckily, the off-field controversy didn’t impact proceedings on the pitch, and the Gers were able to snatch a 1-1 draw which gives them great hope of progressing to the UEFA Champions League.

And hopefully, the pre-match headlines won’t be dominated by any more off-field referee antics before Dynamo Kyiv visit Ibrox on Tuesday 13 August.
